Great Game – Superior Controls,
I usually don’t review wii games but I think this game is far above average so I thought I’d give it a go. When I preordered this game I did not have high hopes as most of the songs seemed too slow to belong in a DDR game (I’m Yours by Jason Mraz? Not your typical DDR fare). Once I started playing the game in choreograph mode though, I realized the faster tempo songs would be way too hard, at least at first. You are moving around a lot – not just stomping your feet.
The best thing about this game? The controls are almost 100% spot on – which is not true for any of the other new dance/exercise games out there. I like Just Dance 2 – my movements are picked up much better than they were in the previous Just Dance – but it still misses a lot of moves that I know I’ve made. Same with Gold’s Gym. That’s the one thing I’ve always liked about DDR – since it uses a dance pad rather than the wimote and nunchuk it is 100% accurate. This game comes pretty close to that – even when using the wimote and nunchuk. The format, with a dancer AND steps and arm movements scrolling up to the arrows on the side, is extremely easy to follow. It may not be as much like dancing as those other titles but it is very fun and for me the instant gratification that comes with seeing my combos rack up is just what I need to keep me playing a little longer.
I did a few songs in classic mode as well and the ones I tried were fun and just about right for my skill level.
I know I am going to use this game a lot. Hope others are inspired to give it a try.

|Not the “reboot” to the series fans have been hoping for,
Dance Dance Revolution was a pioneer in exergaming. Introduced as an arcade game in 1998, it was the first game to use the “body as the controller”, through the use of a special dance pad. The concept was simple: as music plays, arrows will appear on screen to the beat. Match your steps to the arrows to earn points. The result is not only a fun game, but also a great aerobic workout–so much so that schools around the country have even started to include DDR as part of gym class.
The 2010 version of Dance Dance Revolution was supposed to be a “reboot” of the series. It was preceded on the Wii by several versions over the years: Hottest Party in 2007, Hottest Party 2 in 2008, and Hottest Party 3 in 2009.
I’d given rave reviews to Hottest Party 2 and Hottest Party 3 when they came out, but I have to admit, the series is starting to feel a bit dated. When there are games like Just Dance 2 for the Wii and Dance Central for the Kinect out, where players are performing actual dance moves, the notion of trying to hit a pattern of arrows to a beat seems just a little passé.
There is a new feature called “Choreograph Style” mode which feels like an awkward attempt to mimic Just Dance by using a combination of foot motions and hand motions to mimic real dancing moves, but this falls short of the real thing.
It’s starting to feel that Konami isn’t really moving the franchise forward. In fact, the only real “advancements” in this version are that the on-screen characters look a little more polished, and the precision of hand controllers is a bit improved with support for the Wii MotionPlus. Hardly a “reboot” IMO. And disappointingly, there is still no support for downloadable content (DLC), which evidently the new PS3 version does have.

Don’t get me wrong–DDR is still the most precise dance game available and will likely continue to be for a while, thanks to the proprietary dance pad controller. And it is still is a lot of fun and a phenomenal game for fitness and exercise. If you don’t have it already, it’s still a great game to get. But if you have it already (either Hottest Party 2 or Hottest Party 3), I honestly don’t think it’s worth investing another $70.

|Finally Konami got it right!,
My friends just bought this game, and brought it over to my place. We have been playing every night, and are having a blast. Playing with two people in friendship mode is A LOT more fun than playing by yourself!
And most importantly, Konami FINALLY got the hand motion detection down! All other DDRs for Wii that I have played have had horrible hand motions… The first thing I did when I turned the game on was disable hand markers. But on this one it actually detects motion! And not only that, the range of motion in choreography mode is great. Poses and punches in a variety of directions keeps you going. Admittedly, I found choreography mode to be fairly easy, but I enjoyed it anyway. Expert mode lacks arrows, and expects you to mimic the dancers on screen, which is kind of ridiculous. But difficult and easier are a lot of fun.
I’m still figuring out Balance Board mode, so I can’t say much in that area. It’s really a cool deal, but I have not mastered getting it to detect hip movements. That could just be me, so I wont criticize that. And regardless, it’s pretty fun.
And of course, good ol’ classic mode is great. Challenges are fun, music selection is pretty good, and overall my friends and I have been really enjoying it.
It’s about time, Konami. Great job on this one! Now release a software only version, because I don’t need a second dance mat.
